arundathiA graphic marvel on Telugu screen

Shyam Prasad Reddy is known for making choicest films without minding the budget or time. He shot into fame by producing 'Ammoru' in a never before manner by using computer graphics. The film was a big hit during those days. However, his film 'Anji' for which Chiranjeevi had allotted bulk dates like no other film, was also a technical marvel but it failed to be a commercial hit, despite the presence of heavy graphics. Without backtracking from his stance, Shyam Prasad Reddy and Kodi Ramakrishna once again teamed up and brought out another film by using extraordinary graphics. Moreover, they promoted a hitherto glamour heroine Anushka and made her to prove her acting talents. Anushka too did not let down their expectations and did complete justice to the title role.

Arundhati @ Jejamma (Anushka) is the princess of Gadwal Maha Sansthan. Though a girl, she learns all the princely education like fighting, painting and dancing. She has an elder sister and brother-in-law Pasupati (Sonu Sood), who was quite crooked. He is a womaniser and used to rape whoever he likes and kill anyone who comes in his way. Learning that she herself had become an obstacle for punishing the crooked Pasupati, Jejamma's sister commits suicide paving way for her husband's punishment. Even after a thorough thrashing and getting dragged by his horse, Pasupati survives and becomes a big Tantrik. Now he wants to take revenge. Learning that he should not be killed but should be made powerless, Jejamma uses her dance talent and pins his tongue and hands with swords and get him buried alive in the fort. She also takes all precautions from preventing the pretatma from coming out of the tomb. However, the Gadwal area turns a desert because of Pasupati's power and Jejamma after visiting so many places comes to a decision to sacrifice her life to prepare a weapon with which the evil power of Pasupati could be smashed. The weapon should be used by her again by taking a rebirth. It happens after some 60 years. Arundhati takes a rebirth and after 20 years she gets ready for marriage. Did Arundhati was able to attack Pasupati's evil spirit? Did Pasupati's pretatma come out of the tomb? How it tries to take the revenge? How Arundhati gets the weapon? Who helped her in achieving the weapon? Answers to all these questions form part of the climax.

PERFORMANCE:

Anushka is at her best in the role of Jejamma. More than Anushka, the child artiste who played the role is further impressive. Anushka lived to the expectations in the Jejamma's role. However, in Arundhati's role, Anushka failed to impress the audiences. Moreover, the classical dance was not properly choreographed on the heroine and it appears as if the heroine is jumping instead of showing any sign of performing a classical dance. Next comes Sayaji Shinde. For a change, he played a positive role in the film and he needs compliments for his performance in a tantrik's role. Sonu Sood is okay as the villain. His well-toned body was good to look while the voice dubbed for him suited him well. Other artistes including Manorama, Satyanarayana, Subhashini, and others are okay in their respective roles.

arundathiTECHNICAL:

Director Kodi Ramakrishna is known for making such films with films like Ammmoru and Anji to his credit. He had acquired a penchant to make films by using graphics. Beyond his directorial expertise, it was the screenplay prepared by Mallemala Unit, which needs commendation. The entire screenplay was quite gripping. The graphics used in the film are extraordinary and take the audiences to another world almost. The unit maintained a great difference between the fort with lavish paints, lighting, beautiful garden and the dilapidated fort. Music by Koti is okay. Camera work by Senthil Kumar is good and in tune with the graphics while editing by Marthand is appropriate.

REMARKS:

Though the film is very good technically, the absence of entertainment values may prove costly. The director, of course, maintained good tempo. All through the film, the audiences would sit tight to their seats without any other thought. Had the film released as per the schedule, i.e, the Pongal holidays, it could have collected good revenue. But the delay by two days proved costly as people still have to wait for some holidays to go and watch the movie.
