Telugu, Tamil actor Prakash Raj won the Best Actor award for 2007 (National Awards) for his performance in Tamil movie Kanchivaran. Prakash Raj's previous National award was for Iruvar (directed by Maniratnam) in which he got the best supporting actor.  Praksh Raj is well known for his versatile acting skills and this in not a surprise.
Kanchivaran is a movie based that is based on lives of silk-weavers of Kancheepuram before independence. This movie also got the best movie award. Priyadarshan directed this movie.
The best actress award went to Umashree for her performance in Kannada film Gulabi Talkies.
